The state of Massachusetts requires all vehicles to be inspected for safety and emissions within seven calendar days of registration, and inspections must be renewed annually, before the sticker expires. In addition to safety and emissions, the following vehicles also require an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Test:

• Model year 1998 and later passenger cars, trucks and SUVS.
• Model year 1998 and later light-duty diesel vehicles weighing 8,500 pounds or less.
• Model year 2007 and later medium-duty diesel vehicles weighing 8,501 to 14,000 pounds.
• Model year 2008 and later medium-duty non-diesel vehicles weighing 8,501 to 14,000 pounds.

Medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds that are not equipped with an OBD system require an Opacity Test instead.

Vehicles that are not designed to drive on the road, such as construction and farm equipment, skid loaders, and ATVs, do not require emissions tests. Other exemptions include:

• Vehicles manufactured before model year 1997 (but they will fail if they produce visible smoke).
• Light duty diesel vehicles that are at least fifteen model years old and weigh 8,500 pounds or less.
• Medium duty diesel vehicles that were manufactured before model year 2007.
• Medium duty non-diesel vehicles that were manufactured before model year 2008.
• New vehicles delivered to Massachusetts owners.
• Motorcycles and mopeds.
• Tactical military vehicles.
• Vehicles operating exclusively on electric power.
